The Dojo of Okinawan Karate has been operating in the Grand Rapids area for the last 37 years. The Dojo is a FAMILY martial arts center that offers classes to men women and children of all ages. The Dojo is also proud to announce the addition of a new fitness program that includes classes with cardio kickboxing, pilates, yoga, and aerobics type classes.
Toby J. Heberly Kyoshi 7th Dan Oyata Shin Shu Ho Ryu
Toby Heberly has been training in the martial arts for over 40 years. His dojo has been operating continuously since 1975. Mr. Heberly trained 6 days a week his first year of training. His pattern of dedication to Okinawan Karate was set early in his martial arts career. Mr. Heberly has continued to train on a daily basis while instructing karate and kobudo. He feels he must continue to build his own karate and kobudo knowledge through consistant training, in order to pass the knowledge on to his students.
In 2004 Mr. Heberly received the greatest honor of his martial arts career. Induction into the “Oyata Shin Shu Ho ryu” family. The “Oyata Shin Shu Ho “ group is a group of close knit, senior students of Taika Oyata that are expected to carry on the future of Taika’s art of True Life Protection.
Mr Heberly and his family currently reside in the Grandville area.
